A Visit to the Hospice Unit (Day 161)

Hospice Facility entrance

Today I had a doctor’s appointment at the main hospital downtown and on my way out I decided to go up to the in-house hospice unit where you spent your last days for a visit to say “Hello” and “Thank You” to the wonderful caring people there. As soon as I walked through the entrance into that long hallway to the nurse station, I was taken back to those days and nights spent sitting with you in vigil holding your hand as you slipped away towards your transition. But this time, I was not there for you; instead, I hoped to see some of the familiar faces of those who lovingly cared for you and provided comfort to all of us. I wanted to say hello and to express my sincere gratitude and appreciation for doing what they do; and to, perhaps, give some small measure of encouragement back to them.

One of the nurses looked up at me with vague recognition, and as soon as I mentioned your name and circumstances, they all remembered you and our family. Through tears I tried to say the words and one after another the Director and entire on-duty staff came over to me and hugged and comforted me. We spoke of grief and life. They asked about the girls and how your Mom was doing. I mentioned my writing and that I was working on a piece dedicated to Palliative and Hospice Care services. They seemed touched and deeply appreciative of my visit and urged me to share my writing with them.

For me, it was a profound and powerful emotional release. The tears continued on the drive home and are flowing still as I write these words. I am so thankful for these individuals, and for all the dedicated hospice care professionals who provide such an important service.
