Cassie's Haircut (Day 234)

australian sheperd dog

Recently I took Cassie in for a much-needed grooming appointment. Her hair had gotten super long and thick with mats on her hind end; and she just seemed to be weighed down and miserable, not to mention filthy and stinky from her horse poop habit! It was so sad when I dropped her off as she looked at me with sad eyes and trembling body, almost like leaving a child with separation anxiety at daycare. It struck me that with you gone, she now sees me as her person. And in that moment, as I went back over to give her a reassuring hug and kiss, I cried a little, both for her and for me. Cassie was always your dog, and you were her alpha. Now that privilege and responsibility fall to me.

Like the last time when you and I took her in, when I picked her up after her grooming, she was so happy to see her person; only this time it was just me and not you. Now, with her hair cut short she looks much thinner and younger; and she feels so much lighter and cooler without all that extra weight and volume. The little black bandanna looks adorable around her neck and compliments her striking tri-colored coat. She seems to be appreciative of the spa treatment and more playful and energetic at times, but also stays close to me and looks at me with loving eyes when resting.

Dogs are amazing creatures, exhibiting complete loyalty and utter devotion to their chosen persons. The fact that Cassie has accepted me as a surrogate (though not a replacement) for you warms my heart and gives me hope for my journey.
