Father’s Day 2023, another one of the big “firsts” occasions without you! While this one day of the year is focused exclusively on fathers, I can’t help thinking about the fact that my status/identity as a father is not something I achieved on my own. I am a father only because you and I found each other and made a life together first. It all began with the joining of our two hearts in love to create the foundation on which to build a family.
This is in essence the “human experience” as we start out as individuals and become something more than the sum of two parts through the act of joining together with another. Throw in some basic human biology and we move from being two individuals joined together as a couple to being a family - mother, father, children. The more I think about this the more it seems odd that we actually set aside separate days to celebrate fathers and mothers, but we don’t have a similar day to celebrate children. Maybe we should have a day to celebrate families collectively for one cannot exist without the other!
So, on this Father’s Day I am first and foremost thankful for the blessing of my amazing daughters, who have enriched my life in so many ways I could never have imagined. But I am also thankful that God brought us together first, and for the life we shared as husband and wife, which in turn led to our becoming parents.
