Still Burning a Candle (Day 241)

lit candle on table

After nearly eight months, I still burn a candle in the bedroom every night. The physical act of lighting the candle requires my singular focus for that instant to transfer the flame to the wick. In that moment, I think of you and glance at your picture. In addition to being a memorial ritual, the warm flickering glow of the candle is part night light and security blanket to ward off the darkness and chill of loneliness in the room and in the bed. It also serves as a beacon to draw your spirit to me. I do not know how much longer I will continue this nightly ritual. All I know for sure is that I sleep better when the candle is lit.
