Sweetbriar Farm (Day 95)

As I sit here looking out the big picture window and reflect on our beloved “Sweetbriar Farm”, I think how we made a good team, with you as the “visionary”/idea person and me as the implementation/ “get it done” guy. There are so many things that we accomplished here over the years to make this place not just a house, but our home. The big picture window, floor to ceiling bookshelves, taking out the wall between the kitchen and the family room, laundry room renovation, bathroom remodels, landscaping (including the “Great Wall”), kitchen cabinets and countertops, wood floors, furniture, and barn improvements to name a few. All these things are a reflection of our mutual tastes and preferences; and most invested with the pride and sweat equity of doing the work ourselves.

This humble little place we call Sweetbriar Farm is something that we built together after we made our big “Green Acres” lifestyle change nearly 18 years ago. I see each of these projects as a reflection of our relationship. None were executed to perfection or even craftsman level, and I could point out some mistake or flaw in just about every single one. While each project stands alone in function or effect, together they are disproportionately additive to the overall ambience and enjoyment of the place.

I think we were like that - individually imperfect and flawed, and at times, perhaps we operated a bit too independently. But together we built a life mostly full of blessings and joy, with occasional pain or sorrow, that was greater than the sum of our individual parts.

Sweetbriar Farm is more than just a piece of rural real estate. It’s where we invested nearly two decades of our lives - blood, sweat, tears, heart, and soul. It is a living testament to our joint efforts and common bonds, and it’s the place you chose to have your ashes spread.
